Where to start
If you want enemies to lovers between a charge nurse and a grumpy surgeon, start with On Call with Dr. Vance. Bree Okonkwo has spent two years putting Elliot Vance in his place. Then a stalled elevator and a blizzard lockdown leave one narrow bed in room 412.
If you want cat and mouse with a morally gray hero, start with Ghost Call. Paramedic Margo Bodnar has raced to four crashes that never happened, and tonight the man who called them in is standing dry under an awning in the rain, watching her. He Falls First is on its trope list.
If you want firefighters and found family in a why-choose story, start with Next of Kin. Burn nurse Juno Castellane swore never to love a man who runs into fires. Then a captain, a paramedic and a quiet giant from Station Seventeen carry a burned biker through her doors.
If you want a nurse heroine and an MC romance, start with The Night the Fire Turned. Night nurse Linnea Haugen orders three Iron Corsairs to take their colors off at the door. By dawn a wildfire has jumped the river, and their clubhouse is the only safe place left.
If you want a morally gray doctor and a whistleblower heroine, start with The Night Ward. She came to recover a stolen record and reclaim her name, and the doctor holding the exit key has a truth of his own to confess. Earned trust and redemptive devotion are on its trope list.
If you want a bodyguard romance with a scarred hero, start with Four Minutes Out. Sarah Holmquist guards the front desk of the most secretive clinic in Seattle. A scarred ex-soldier walks past her in ninety seconds and calls her the weakest point, and then a black card lands on her pillow.
What is medical romance?
Medical romance is a love story set where people get treated: hospitals, clinics, ambulances and emergency rooms. At least one of the leads works in health care, and the job is never just background. Shifts, emergencies and patients decide when the couple can talk, where they end up stuck together and what each of them stands to lose.
The pull of the genre is competence. These are people who keep their heads in a trauma bay or at a crash site, and the romance asks what happens when someone finally sees the person behind the badge. Medical romance also borrows easily from other genres, so a hospital story can be a workplace rivalry, a disaster story or romantic suspense.
Alisson Bento’s free medical romance stories use all three. Several put a medical heroine in danger as well as in love, and each story page lists its tropes so you can see the shape of a story before you start.
Who you meet in these medical romance stories
The heroines hold the work together. In On Call with Dr. Vance, Bree Okonkwo is a charge nurse in Denver. Margo Bodnar in Ghost Call is a paramedic. Linnea Haugen is the night nurse at a tiny mountain hospital in The Night the Fire Turned, and Juno Castellane is a burn nurse in Next of Kin. Before the Water Rose follows a doctor whose clinic needs power before a coastal storm, The Quiet Before High Tide sends a relief doctor to an isolated clinic in Maine, and Sarah Holmquist in Four Minutes Out keeps the front desk of a secretive Seattle clinic running.
The men come from inside and outside the building. Elliot Vance is a grumpy trauma surgeon. The Night Ward has a morally gray doctor holding the exit key. Before the Water Rose brings in a former army medic, Four Minutes Out a scarred ex-soldier, and Ghost Call has Hollis Fenwick, who makes problems disappear for a doctor who does not exist. Next of Kin has firefighters from Station Seventeen, and The Night the Fire Turned has bikers from the Iron Corsairs.
Forced proximity is the trope that turns up most. A stalled elevator and a blizzard lock Bree and Elliot inside the hospital for thirty-six hours. A wildfire leaves the bikers’ stone clubhouse on the ridge as the only safe place for Linnea’s patients. The Night Ward, Before the Water Rose and Four Minutes Out list it too.
Medical romance with suspense or a why-choose team
For danger that comes from people, look at The Clinical Obsessions Series. In The Night Ward, a woman comes to recover a stolen record and reclaim her name. In Ghost Call, someone has stolen Hollis Fenwick’s trick, and Margo is the problem they want gone. In Four Minutes Out, a stranger offers to pay Sarah’s mother’s care bills for a list of names, and a black card lands on her pillow.
Elsewhere the weather is the threat. Before the Water Rose, from The Pulse Point Series, is set against a coastal storm. In The Night the Fire Turned, a wildfire has jumped the river by dawn. On Call with Dr. Vance, a standalone, keeps its pressure inside the hospital walls during a blizzard lockdown.
The Healing Touch is the series for readers who want one heroine with more than one partner. The Quiet Before High Tide and Next of Kin are tagged Why Choose, and The Night the Fire Turned is tagged Reverse Harem. Each heroine meets three men: three protectors at a Maine clinic, three Iron Corsairs at a mountain hospital, and a captain, a paramedic and a quiet giant from Station Seventeen.
