Where to start

  • If you want second chance and enemies to lovers under one roof, start with Spurs and Satin. Lingerie designer Daisy Harlan comes home to Wyoming to sell the ranch and finds Wade McCallister, the bronc rider who broke her heart at nineteen, holding a lease. They split the house with blue tape.

  • If you want a why-choose story with two best friends, start with Saddled With Both. Rodeo photographer Cass Reyes is in the Texas Hill Country for a dude-ranch campaign when quiet ex-Marine Jesse Dalton and ex-bronc rider Nash Corbin make her a plain proposal: both of them, or neither.

  • If you want a grumpy/sunshine small-town story where he falls first, start with Leave the Light On. Val Halloway runs the Bitter Creek feed store and never asks anyone to stay. Then a banged-up bronc rider rents the room across the hall for six weeks, and a developer comes for her store.

  • If you want a why-choose story with three protective men and real danger, start with Three Cowboys, One Way Home. A capable hauler has eight horses to get out during a wildfire evacuation, and three cowboys want a place in her heart. It is a Wild Hearts Ranch prequel.

  • If you want a single-dad cowboy and a heroine starting over, start with Last Stop Before Iron Heart. New vet Tessa Marlowe needs a paying client, and gas station cowboy Cal Bishop wants her away from the black stallion at Iron Heart. When the stallion wins, Cal becomes her hands.

  • If you want a snowed-in second chance with one cowboy, start with One Night at Silver Creek. The heroine is stranded on the ranch of the man she left ten years ago, and the tropes on its page list forced proximity and a protective hero. It runs 15,479 words.

What is cowboy romance?

Cowboy romance is a love story set where the work happens outdoors and the weather gets a vote. The hero rides broncs, runs cattle, trains horses or keeps a ranch going through a hard season. The heroine walks into that life, or back into it, and has to decide whether there is room in it for her. The happy ending usually comes with a place to belong as well as a person.

In these free cowboy romance stories, the ranch work drives the plot. In Hers by Spring, the deadline is a calving season. In Three Cowboys, One Way Home, eight horses need a way out during a wildfire evacuation. In Last Stop Before Iron Heart, a new horse doctor heads up to a black stallion that everyone at the last gas station warned her about. The land and the animals set the stakes, and the love story grows out of the job.

Small towns are the other half of the genre. A feed store, a gas station counter, a county where one vet answers every call. People know each other’s business, and in Sealed in the Bitterroot the whole valley is watching what the heroine does next.

Who are the heroines and cowboys in these stories?

The women in this collection arrive with a trade. Daisy Harlan in Spurs and Satin is a lingerie designer who came home to Wyoming to sell her late grandfather’s ranch. Cass Reyes in Saddled With Both is a rodeo photographer shooting a dude-ranch campaign in the Texas Hill Country. Evelyn Hart in Sealed in the Bitterroot is a notary who has never stamped a paper she didn’t see signed. Val Halloway runs the feed store in Bitter Creek, Montana, in Leave the Light On. The heroine of Three Cowboys, One Way Home is a capable hauler, and The Saddle That Fits follows an independent craftswoman whose patterns are gone.

The men are just as specific. Bronc riders turn up more than once: Wade McCallister in Spurs and Satin, now scarred and holding a lease through October; Nash Corbin, the golden ex-bronc rider in Saddled With Both; and the banged-up bronc rider renting the room across the hall in Leave the Light On. Cal Bishop in Last Stop Before Iron Heart is a single-dad cowboy behind a gas station counter. Sealed in the Bitterroot pairs its heroine with a snowplow driver and a brand inspector who have loved her for years.

Winter is a recurring opponent. Sealed in the Bitterroot, Hers by Spring and One Night at Silver Creek all list being snowed in among their tropes, and Hers by Spring sets the snow against a calving season. For cowboy romance stories online with snow and nowhere else to go, those are the place to look.

One cowboy or why choose?

This page holds both kinds of free cowboy romance stories, and the tropes on each story page tell you which is which. In a one-cowboy story, the heroine falls for a single man. In a why-choose story, she doesn’t have to pick one: the romance is between her and more than one partner.

The one-cowboy stories are Spurs and Satin, Where the Summer Holds, The Saddle That Fits, Leave the Light On, Last Stop Before Iron Heart and One Night at Silver Creek. Spurs and Satin and One Night at Silver Creek are second-chance stories; in the second, the heroine is stranded on the ranch of the man she left ten years ago. Where the Summer Holds and Last Stop Before Iron Heart both have single-dad heroes.

The why-choose stories are Saddled With Both, Sealed in the Bitterroot, Three Cowboys, One Way Home, Halfmoon Winter and Hers by Spring. Saddled With Both and Sealed in the Bitterroot each have two men; in Saddled With Both they are best friends who have shared before and ask the heroine plainly. The other three each have three men. In Hers by Spring they are a blunt neighbor, a patient new vet and a young cowboy, and the trope list includes Cowboys Who Ask First.

How to pick a cowboy romance by series or reading time

Three series run through this collection. The Wild Sky Legacy holds Where the Summer Holds, Leave the Light On and Last Stop Before Iron Heart, all one-cowboy stories with Grumpy/Sunshine among their tropes. Wild Hearts Ranch holds Three Cowboys, One Way Home, Halfmoon Winter and Hers by Spring, all why choose; Three Cowboys, One Way Home is described as a prequel. Wild Hearts Outlaws holds The Saddle That Fits, with one quiet cowboy, and Sealed in the Bitterroot, with two men. Spurs and Satin, Saddled With Both and One Night at Silver Creek aren’t listed as part of a series.

For about an hour of reading, Halfmoon Winter is 14,957 words, about 65 minutes, and Sealed in the Bitterroot, Leave the Light On, Hers by Spring, Last Stop Before Iron Heart and One Night at Silver Creek run between 15,127 and 15,494 words, 66 or 67 minutes. Where the Summer Holds, The Saddle That Fits and Three Cowboys, One Way Home run between 20,313 and 20,412 words, 88 or 89 minutes. The longest are Spurs and Satin at 27,305 words (119 minutes) and Saddled With Both at 29,331 words (128 minutes).
