Free Sports Romance Stories

What is sports romance?

Sports romance is a love story built around an athlete, a team or a season. The game gives the story its clock: playoffs coming, a contract that can’t be broken, one weekend that has to go right. The athlete has a public life and a private problem, and the person he or she falls for is usually the one who sees both.

Alisson Bento’s free sports romance stories cover hockey, football, soccer and motorsport. What they share is a heroine with work of her own before an athlete walks into it: a physical therapist with a no-players clause, an event planner on a three-day football contract, a woman who paints the lines at a training ground, a pediatric nurse who hates football. Several of them start with a rule against dating players.

The settings change with the sport: a hockey rink shared with a goalie, a small-town diner booth before dawn, a soccer training ground with wet paint on the penalty spot, a transplant unit with a red line a football player stops at. A separated shoulder or nerves before kickoff matter because of what they cost the people involved.

A Date Before Faceoff is a fake-dating hockey romance: she needs a wedding date, and the goalie sharing her rink agrees on one condition, that she gets to choose every step. Coach’s daughter and long-distance relationship are in its tropes. In Three Days a Week, art student Tierney Burke has one rule, no hockey players, and especially not Fletcher Hayes. Three mornings a week she guards the secret his best friend left behind.

Football and soccer romance stories

The football stories all belong to the Romance Football Anthology: Room for Purple, On the House and Tackling the Nurse. On the House is the quarterback story. Pie baker Lottie Lund doesn’t do football players, then the starting quarterback falls asleep in her back booth before sunrise and refuses a single free slice. Room for Purple is a second chance, with an event planner on a three-day football contract and her former-player ex. Tackling the Nurse pairs pediatric nurse Mina Price, who hates football, with her brother’s new teammate.

The soccer stories are Inside the Lines and The Space Between Passes. Inside the Lines is set at Blackwell FC’s training ground, where Edie Varga paints the lines and the club’s youngest striker, Tobi Adeyemi, runs his boots through her wet paint. The Space Between Passes is a sapphic soccer romance between two adult teammates, a goalkeeper and a midfielder, at a club in trouble. It belongs to The Game of Love: Sapphic Sports Romances and is described as a spoiler-free prequel.

The Unfinished Lap takes sports romance stories online somewhere else: motorsport. Her figures disagree with his instincts, and they have to share one test car. Its tropes are professional rivals, forced teamwork, competence attraction and earned trust. It belongs to The Playbook Series, and Inside the Lines is also in that series.
