Where to start

  • If you want a heroine who wins on her own terms, start with Winner Takes Her. Nadia Volkova beats the Bratva heir at his own private game, and his rematch stakes are three nights in which she sets every rule. Its tropes include card game seduction, her rules and a debt bargain.

  • If you want forbidden romance with an age gap, start with Sworn to the Consigliere. Dante Ferraro has never broken the Don’s orders, including the newest one: hide the Don’s goddaughter at her late father’s shuttered Napa vineyard and never lay a hand on her. Four days alone put that order to the test.

  • If you want a bodyguard romance with an off-limits heroine, start with The Oyabun’s Sister. Architect Yumi Tatsuya has always refused to be guarded. Then a stranger photographs her window, and her brother, the most feared oyabun in Tokyo, sends silent, scarred Hiro. He has one rule about her.

  • If you want to try why-choose mafia romance, start with Open All Night. Lena Kowalski keeps her late grandmother’s laundromat open all night, and her regulars are three quiet, dangerous men. When a mob collector asks about the girl across the street, Lena lies, and all three choose her.

  • If you want the shortest read in the collection, start with The Bratva Doctor: 14,705 words, about 64 minutes. Trauma doctor Clara Whitfield saves a Bratva soldier’s life in a back room, and the Pakhan says she now owes his family thirty nights. Its tropes include doctor romance and he falls first.

  • If you want a craft heroine and a protector with a conflict of interest, start with The Kiln House Bargain. A potter has four nights to disprove a debt, and the man protecting her stands to profit from her ruin. Its tropes include compromised protector, earned trust and costly redemption.

What is mafia romance?

Mafia romance is a love story set inside organized crime. The hero holds a place in a criminal family: a boss, an heir, an enforcer, a driver, a collector. The heroine usually stands outside that world, or gets pulled to its edge by a debt, a secret or something she saw. The romance grows from the pressure between the two: his loyalty to the family, and what she starts to mean to him.

The genre has its own vocabulary, and the hooks in this collection use it freely. Bratva is the usual word for a Russian crime brotherhood, and the pakhan is the boss at the top. A Don leads an Italian-style family, and the consigliere is his trusted adviser. In Japan, an oyabun heads a yakuza group. Knowing those few words makes free mafia romance stories much easier to sort at a glance.

Mafia romance often borrows from suspense: a forged document, a witness who knows too much, a stranger who wants the same dock. In Alisson Bento’s free mafia romance stories, that danger sets the stakes, and the love story stays at the center all the way to a happy ending.

Which crime families are in these mafia romance stories?

Bratva stories make up the largest group. Winner Takes Her opens at a Brighton Beach card table, where Nadia Volkova is working off her dead father’s debt and beats Lev Sokolov, heir to the Bratva that holds it. In The Pakhan’s Voice, Vera Lane is hired to write down what the Russians whisper. In The Bratva Doctor, trauma doctor Clara Whitfield follows a trail of perfect stitches to a back room on Rainier Avenue.

Italian-style families appear too. In Sworn to the Consigliere, Dante Ferraro has kept every order the Don ever gave him, including the order to hide the Don’s goddaughter, Sera Lucchese, at her late father’s shuttered Napa vineyard while Chicago burns. Other stories start from a single order: Blood Oath at Midnight begins with a man ordered to silence a witness, who makes her his wife instead.

The collection also reaches past both. The Oyabun’s Sister is set in Tokyo, where architect Yumi Tatsuya’s brother is the most feared oyabun in the city. Kept by the River Kings trades crime families for three outlaws who move mountain whiskey by night. Other stories travel to a Miami repair shop, Piraeus, a hiding place deep in the bayou and a one-room studio on Calle Ocho.

What these free mafia romance stories have in common

Debts and paper drive many of them. A potter has four nights to disprove a debt in The Kiln House Bargain. A forged debt threatens a repair shop in Before the Tide Turns. In The Price of the Tide, a torn receipt threatens Marta’s workshop, and the man sent to collect it has his own signature on the paper. In A Seam for the Wolf, a curvy mender finds her aunt’s name on a bloodstained receipt.

The heroines have work they are good at, and that skill often puts them in the path of trouble. Nadia counts every card. Clara is a trauma doctor, Delphine Marchand in The Girl Who Wouldn’t Tell is a private investigator, and Paloma Quintana in Guarded by the Bratva cleans old paintings. Several story pages list tropes such as craft heroine, competent heroine or professional competence.

The heroes are protectors with complicated loyalties. Story pages describe them as a compromised protector, a morally compromised protector, a wounded protector or a possessive enforcer. Forced proximity appears on more story pages here than any other trope, so most couples spend the story in close quarters, from a shuttered vineyard to a one-room studio with one bed.

How to choose your next mafia romance story online

By trope: for why-choose romance, where one heroine has more than one partner, try The Girl Who Wouldn’t Tell, Open All Night, Kept by the River Kings or Guarded by the Bratva, each with three men. For a single protector, The Oyabun’s Sister and The Enforcer Who Stayed list bodyguard tropes. Curvy heroines lead A Seam for the Wolf, The Enforcer Who Stayed and Guarded by the Bratva.

By series: The Laws of the Bratva includes The Winter Claim, The Bratva Doctor and The Pakhan’s Voice. Curvy Queens of the Bratva includes A Seam for the Wolf, The Enforcer Who Stayed and Guarded by the Bratva. The Syndicate’s Price pairs The Kiln House Bargain with The Oyabun’s Sister, and Bloodline Obsession pairs The Girl Who Wouldn’t Tell with Open All Night.

By length: the shortest is The Bratva Doctor at 14,705 words, about 64 minutes. Many stories sit near 15,000 words (64 to 67 minutes), a second group sits near 20,000 words (85 to 88 minutes), and the longest are Winner Takes Her at 25,485 words (111 minutes) and Sworn to the Consigliere at 29,289 words (127 minutes). The opening chapters read free in any browser, phone included, and the rest unlocks after you confirm your email.

Questions

Before you fall in.

Are these mafia romance stories really free?

Yes. The opening chapters are on the page, and the rest of each story unlocks for free once you confirm your email. No payment, no card, no subscription.

Are they dark romance?

They are dangerous-world romances: crime families, debts, threats and protective heroes. Each story page lists its tropes, so you can choose before you start. For the darkest stories, see the free dark romance collection.

Do I need to read them in order?

No. Each novella is a complete story with its own couple. Some are companions to a paid series; the story page names the series if it belongs to one.

How long are these mafia romance stories?

They are novellas, from 14,705 words (The Bratva Doctor, about 64 minutes) to 29,289 words (Sworn to the Consigliere, about 127 minutes). Most fall into two groups: close to 15,000 words, a little over an hour of reading, or close to 20,000 words, closer to an hour and a half. Each story page shows its exact word count and reading time.

Is there why-choose mafia romance in this collection?

Yes. The Girl Who Wouldn’t Tell, Open All Night, Kept by the River Kings and Guarded by the Bratva each pair one heroine with three men. Delphine is hidden in the bayou by three of Malachi Vane’s men, Lena’s laundromat regulars choose her, Shiloh inherits a debt to three outlaws, and Paloma gets three guards and one bed.

Is there a forced marriage or enemies-to-lovers mafia romance?

Yes. Blood Oath at Midnight lists both. Its hook: he was ordered to silence the witness, and instead he made her his wife. Its tropes also include possessive hero and protector. The Pakhan’s Voice lists enemies to lovers as well: Vera Lane was hired to write down what the Russians whispered, and she heard the one secret that could start a war.

Pass it on.
